There are two locks at Sunbury. The new one (built in 1927) is mechanised, while the old lock is operated by hand and is only used at busy times.

Hampton Church and ferry viewed from Hurst Park, where there used to be a riverside racecourse. Flat racing commenced on 25 March in 1891 and ended in October 1962.

Garrick’s Ait is an attractive island opposite Hampton Church. Timber chalets like this are only accessible by boat.

Hampton Court

Hampton Court’s sumptuous palace is the finest secular building in England. Built as a private home by Cardinal Wolsey in 1515, it was passed on to King Henry VIII in 1529. Did Wolsey give the palace to Henry as a present or was it taken from him? Whatever the reason, Wolsey was executed for treason in 1530. Henry entertained lavishly at the palace and his wife Jane gave birth to his only son at Hampton Court in 1537; she died there twelve days later. Subsequent monarchs lived or stayed at the palace, which was partly rebuilt by architect Christopher Wren between 1656 and 1704. The Thames façade was largely the work of Wren, and the wrought iron gates on the riverside are very fine. The superb palace gardens have a long herbaceous border which is at its best in July. The maze, built in 1690, is always popular with visitors. Hampton Court also hosts an annual flower festival in July.
